Vacationing at the beach this past week surrounded not only by my own children but in-laws and three very enthusiastic miniature nieces , I dedicated an hour each morning to A Sentimental Journey, and consider it the best part of my holiday. The sentence is open to interpretation. The text is accompanied by an outstandingly rich and pertinent selection of contextualising contemporary documentation. This is pure character-driven, plotless fun.

He is best known for his novels The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, and A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy; but he also published many sermons, wrote memoirs, and was involved in local politics. The Sentimental Journey was slight, enjoyable, and baffling. Autobiographical glimpses are tastefully blended with fictitious incidents in the book. The language is some of the roughest I've read this side of Shakespeare, and the first few pages seemed impenetrable at first, but if one wades bravely in, taking the time to disentangle the sentences, and armed with a good dictionary: The book will pay off. My first choice for A Sentimental Journey is the Oxford World's Classics edition edited by Ian Jack and Tim Parnell. Basically, I have taken away the memory of Smelfungus and Mundungus, the poor travelers between which I am usually seated on an airplane. That glimpse he gives us of his erotic adventure in Milan is, unfortunately all we get of Italy. This is nice and subtle- on the one hand, it tugs the heart-strings unashamedly; on the other hand, it makes ruthless fun of you for having your heart-string tugged. The chapters are bitesize but thin-in-content, making it pleasant to read if not altogether interesting—a few semi-comic mishaps befall the narrator, and the Tobias Smollett parodies are amusing too. There is plenty of self-questioning here but no morbidity, no depression.
