Civil war erupts to overthrow Macbeth, resulting in more death. It is my favorite of all Shakespeare's tragedies and I was looking forward to seeing how Nesbo would give it a modern twist. This derives perhaps from the fact that the story contains many historical fabrications—including the entire character of Banquo, who was invented by a 16th-century Scottish historian in order to validate the Stuart family line. The third book, the Redbreast, really takes the series into the stratosphere, but the first two are necessary for background. As the final battle commences, Macbeth hears of Lady Macbeth's suicide and mourns. Their love still burns bright, an intoxicating flame.

This novel mostly follows the trajectory of the original play, albeit in a suitably blood drenched and twisted fashion. I loved the setting and the descriptions. There are many long, descriptive passages and the characters frequently dwell at length on their own particular ambitions or failures. After being flattered by and his own wife, Macbeth rationalizes that murdering his king and usurping the throne is the right thing to do. The king's sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, fear they will be blamed for Duncan's death and flee the country.
Highly entertaining and providing you are not a purist, highly recommended. I was so excited when it was announced that the Hogarth Shakespeare series was adding Macbeth to its line up. It is a job that Mac Duff, his longest friend, has coveted. Having not experienced the classic myself, I have nothing to compare to, but will surely be reading it sooner than later.
